The top hat dates back as far as the 18th century where it was widely worn by all walks of life. Originally the top hat was made from silk but with the silk hat no longer being in production fur felt is now used. The acceptable colours are much as they have traditionally been, with black top hats widely worn for formal occassions and grey, a daytime racing colour worn at less formal occassions such as Royal Ascot.
